West Papua - brief background info

* WEST PAPUA is the western half of the island of New Guinea and was taken over by Indonesia in 1969.

* The current indigenous population is estimated at 1.3 million.

* Thousands of indigenous Papuans have been killed or tortured right on Australia's doorstep, and people like Alexander Downer and the ALP's Kevin Rudd pretend it doesn't exist.

* Papuans have never had a say in their own future. They were forced to become part of Indonesia through the totally discredited "Act of Free Choice" in 1969.

* Despite being a UN supervised referendum, only 1% of the population was allowed to vote and even then it was under threat of violence. Several UN officials have now disowned the vote.

* In Australia The Greens and The Democrats oppose Indonesia's control of West Papua, but even most left-wing Labor MP's tow the party line and refuse to support self-determination.

* Between 1975 and 1998 the same policy applied to East Timor. Both major parties in Australia supported Indonesia's occupation, despite the fact that literally thousands were being tortured or killed.

* Australia only intervened in East Timor after massive public anger about the massacres taking place. People like Downer now pretend that Australia saved the day. Sheer hypocrisy.

* ALP leader and former Shadow Foreign Affairs minister, Kevin Rudd, has a high media profile but he almost NEVER mentions West Papua.

In a recent newspaper article his pathetic attitude was exposed:
